Pressure test wall mounted A/C short on refrigerant
Leak testing
Location: Desford, Leicestershire

Customer called us to site due to their wall mounted air conditioning unit not working so well in cooling. Air off temperature was poor and system showed signs of a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant gauges connected and suction pressures checked, the unit was running short at 20psi. We reclaimed the remaining refrigerant into a reclaim cylinder and put nitrogen into the system. Once the system was at high pressure with nitrogen, we began to check the flare joints and all leak prone areas on the system. Both the evaporator and condenser were completely stripped down and pipework checked with leak detecting spray. Checking the condenser, I found multiple small coil leaks. When coil leaks occur there are usually more than one as I found on this system. Sometimes they can be repairable however other times you may need a new coil or a new system. I have attached a photo for you to see how small the refrigerant leaks can be. Once the leaks had been detected the nitrogen was evacuated and system isolated and locked off for safety.
Leak testing units can take anything from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the size of the system and the severity of the leak. There are many methods of finding them too, in some cases UV refrigerant dye is put into the system and we can then return to site with a UV light to find extremely small leaks. If your system is not working as well as it should or not working at all then give us a call, we would be more than happy to help.
